Wooden furniture care 101: tips for longevity and beauty

Wooden furniture adds warmth, elegance, and character to any space, making it a timeless choice for interior decor. Whether you’ve invested in a custom piece from Di Giorgio Design & Craft (DDC) in Escondido, CA, or you’re looking to preserve a cherished heirloom, proper care is essential to maintain its beauty and extend its lifespan. In this guide, we’ll explore essential tips for wooden furniture care to help you keep your pieces looking pristine for years to come.

Accidents happen, but prompt action can help prevent permanent damage to your wooden furniture. If a spill occurs, blot it immediately with a clean, dry cloth to soak up excess liquid.

1. Dust Regularly

Regular dusting is key to preventing buildup and maintaining the natural beauty of your wooden furniture. Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a microfiber duster to gently remove dust and debris from the surface. Avoid using rough materials that could scratch or damage the wood.

2. Use Furniture Polish Sparingly

While furniture polish can add shine and luster to wooden surfaces, it’s important to use it sparingly. Excessive use of polish can lead to a buildup that dulls the finish over time. Instead, opt for a high-quality, non-silicone-based polish and apply it in small amounts as needed.

When ordering a table from DDC, there is no polish needed! Our tables come pre-sealed/coated with a clear nano top coat that provides heat, UV, water, oil, and chemical resistance, all the while intensifying your furniture’s brilliant appearance. The top coat brings a final layer of defensive protection, absorbing the everyday abuse that your furniture naturally endures.

3. Protect from Sunlight and Moisture

Wood is sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, which can cause it to expand, contract, or warp over time. To protect your wooden furniture, avoid placing it in direct sunlight or near sources of heat or moisture, such as radiators or air conditioning vents. Use blinds or curtains to shield furniture from harsh sunlight, and use coasters or placemats to prevent water rings and stains.

To prevent smaller wood products like coasters, and cutting boards, from warping and cracking, never submerge them in water, or place in the dishwasher. Instead, wipe with a damp cloth, or hand wash with soap and water, drying thoroughly.

4. Clean Spills Immediately

Accidents happen, but prompt action can help prevent permanent damage to your wooden furniture. If a spill occurs, blot it immediately with a clean, dry cloth to soak up excess liquid. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the spill and potentially damage the finish. Once the spill is absorbed, gently clean the area with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.

*Please note: Avoid harsh chemicals, and/or scrubbing vigorously during cleaning, as it may lead to fading of the finish.

5. Maintain Proper Humidity Levels

Maintaining consistent humidity levels in your home is crucial for preserving the integrity of your wooden furniture. Fluctuations in humidity can cause wood to swell or shrink, leading to cracks, splits, and other damage. Use a humidifier or dehumidifier to regulate humidity levels as needed, especially during extreme weather conditions.

6. Schedule Regular Maintenance

Even with proper care, wooden furniture may require occasional maintenance to keep it looking its best.

Periodically season your Cutting/Charcuterie boards with food grade mineral oil, at least once a month, or more if used more frequently.

(We recommend Howard Cutting Board Oil, which exceeds U.S. FDA requirements for food contact surfaces and is safe for all food preparation surfaces.)

And for your furniture: DDC offers professional services for restoring old wooden furniture and can also assist with routine maintenance tasks such as refinishing, resealing, and repairing minor damage.
