sustainable designs from reclaimed materials

Every piece we create is unique and made with intention. For this reason we make a large percentage of our designs from reclaimed wood and other materials.

Reclaimed wood is salvaged from various lumber sources like leftover pieces from other wood shops, buildings or decks undergoing demolition, used palettes, and felled/fallen trees.

This gives the wood added character in the form of natural patina, paint, or wear, that you can’t find anywhere else.

Quick stats on wood waste

Sourcing reclaimed wood is generally sustainable because the process diverts wood waste into new functioning space instead of, e.g., a landfill.

Reclaiming wood reduces deforestation as it demands relatively fewer resources than growing and cutting down living trees for timber.

A Sustainable Option

Reclaimed materials is the most sustainable option when it comes to purchasing furniture or art for your home.

Choosing reclaimed wood/materials not only saves energy, but it also reduces deforestation, decreases the amount of wood sent to the landfill, and it reduces the need for fossil fuels.

Doing Our Part

Offsetting wood consumption

We work with the tree planting charities, such as the Eden Reforestation Project, whose mission is to combat worldwide deforestation by employing local communities to plant trees, providing an empowering means to alleviate extreme poverty through environmental stewardship.

We also reuse every inch of wood possible, creating many smaller crafts out of the leftovers or "off cuts" that result from our larger projects.

Example: We made a coffee table, a cutting board, and several sets of coasters, all from a single slab chosen by one of our clients.

They even ended up purchasing the cutting board and a set of the coasters!

🌳Repurposed/Upcycled Shipping Materials

By choosing to ship with repurposed/upcycled shipping materials, rather than branded gift boxes, we’re encouraging recipients to engage in sustainable practices by reusing, repurposing, or regifting them.

This approach reduces waste and promotes a more eco-friendly way of celebrating occasions.

It also aligns with the growing awareness of environmental responsibility and encourages a circular approach to gift giving.

5 FACTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT RECLAIMED WOOD

Now that you know these facts about reclaimed wood, you can make a better decision when buying a wooden product. Contact DDC today if you wish to buy aΒ custom wooden deskΒ and other reclaimed wood products.

When manufacturers use reclaimed wood in furniture, they use a material that builders once used to create a wooden structure. Because of its prior use, you may think the materials will produce weak furniture. This is not true!

Some reclaimed wood is stronger than new lumber. Reclaimed wood from old-growth trees is strong thanks to its thick internal fibers. This will allow your product to last longer than one built from new wood.

Something elseΒ you didn’t know about reclaimed woodΒ is it can give you access to exotic wood. Today, many companies will not use exotic wood from new trees to prevent it from becoming endangered.

However, if a manufacturer finds this same material as reclaimed wood, they can use it in your furniture without any issues. That will add to the value and look of your product, which will make it more intriguing.

When manufacturers use reclaimed wood, they are not only building a piece of furniture but also preserving history. The wood they use comes from various sources, including factories, barns, crates, and ships.

So, when they use that wood again, they give it a second life that reflects its past.

The most valuable reclaimed woods, sustainability-wise, are old-growth woods. These were harvested from trees left to grow to maturity and more. The longer trees grow, the more tightly packed their growth rings, which resist rot better.

Old-growth wood is more durable and less likely to splinter, split or warp than new-growth wood. Because of their physical advantages, sourcing old-growth wood, for example, from used buildings, could be more resource efficient than logging virgin timber from young trees

Using reclaimed wood is beneficial for the environment. Whenever a furniture manufacturer uses this wood, they reduce the need to cut down trees and make lumber. This allows the trees to live longer and protects the habitats they grow in.

Recycling wood reduces greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Plants sequester carbon through photosynthesis, which sucks carbon dioxide from the air and yields sugar and oxygen. The amount of carbon absorbed isΒ significant, as 50% of dry wood’s weight consists of carbon from the atmosphere.Β

Each year, a mature treeΒ can absorbΒ more than 48 pounds of carbon dioxide and store it until the tree degrades through decomposition or burning.Β

When you choose reclaimed wood for your furniture, you are personally helping the environment.
